約400年もの間使い続けられた、弥生時代の墓地です。甕棺（かめかん）と呼ばれる、北部九州の限られた地域で使用された土器の棺が348基も出土しました。甕棺も時期によって形が変化しており、弥生時代の墓制の変遷を明らかにする上で非常に重要な遺跡です。国の史跡に指定されています。
　展示館では、甕棺の変化をわかりやすく展示しているほか、発掘当時の姿を甕棺や人骨も含め一部公開しています。展示館周辺は「弥生の森」としても整備されており、隠れたお散歩スポットとなっています。

This is a Yayoi-period cemetery that was in continuous use for about 400 years. A total of 348 jar coffins (kamekan)—ceramic coffins used only in limited parts of northern Kyushu—have been unearthed. The shapes of these jar coffins changed over time, and together with those changes, the site is extremely important for clarifying how funerary practices evolved during the Yayoi period. It is designated as a National Historic Site of Japan.

In the exhibition hall, the changing forms of the jar coffins are presented in an easy-to-understand way, and part of the excavation—as found at the time, including jar coffins and human remains—is open to view. The grounds around the hall have been developed as “Yayoi no Mori” (“Yayoi Grove”), making it a hidden little spot for a stroll.
