福岡藩六代藩主黒田継高（くろだつぐたか）が旧早良郡田島村に設けた別荘。藩儒（はんじゅ）竹田定直（たけださだなお）が撰んだ、久世通夏（くぜみちなつ）の「世にたへぬあつさもしらずわき出る　泉を友とむすぶいほりを」という歌から名づけられました。『筑前国続風土記附録（ちくぜんのくにぞくふどきふろく）』の絵図には西北に福岡城を眺み、樋井川（ひいかわ）の流れと湧水を水源にしたらしい池泉や、中島を配した亭の様子が画かれています。
　昭和初期には樋井川村役場として利用されていました。その後所有者の変転で荒廃していましたが、苑池（えんち）の地割や石組に従って池泉回遊式（ちせんかいゆうしき）の庭園を復元整備し、昭和56(1981)年から一般に公開されています。平成10(1998)年3月に福岡市指定名勝となりました。
　友泉亭本館の大広間は昭和11(1936)年に完成しました。庭園の復元整備時には主要部が修復され、茶室、水屋、便所、事務所等の部屋が整備されています。床まわりの意匠や、大広間全体で杉柾の良材を多用する点、池に面した部分では柱を省き眺望を第一にするなど、細やかな工夫が施されています。
　昭和11(1936)年建立当初の全体性は失っているものの、庭園建築として県内でも有数であり、江戸時代の大名住居と近代和風建築が調和し併存する好例です。市の指定名勝を構成する文化財建造物としても貴重です。

A villa established by Kuroda Tsugutaka, the sixth lord of the Fukuoka Domain, in the former Tajima Village of Sawara District. The name was taken from a poem selected by the domain Confucian scholar Takeda Sadanao, from Kuze Michinatsu’s verse: “Untroubled by the unbearable summer heat, a spring (sen) wells forth—let me bind a hermitage with this spring as my friend (yu).” In the illustration in the Chikuzen no Kuni Zokufudoki, a geographical record of the Chikuzen region, one can see that the pavilion looked northwest toward Fukuoka Castle, and that there was a pond apparently fed by the flow of the Hii River and by spring water, with an islet placed in the middle.

In the early Shōwa period the site was used as the Hii River Village Office. Later, after changes in ownership, it fell into decline, but the stroll garden around the pond was restored in accordance with the original layout of the garden and stonework, and it has been open to the public since 1981 (Shōwa 56). In March 1998 (Heisei 10) it was designated a Fukuoka City place of scenic beauty.

The grand hall of the Yusentei main building was completed in 1936 (Shōwa 11). During the restoration of the garden, the principal parts were repaired and rooms such as a tea room, mizuya (preparation area), lavatories, and an office were arranged. Thoughtful touches include the treatment around the alcove, the extensive use throughout the great hall of fine straight-grained cedar boards, and the omission of columns on the pond-facing side to put the view first.

Although it no longer preserves the complete integrity of its 1936 appearance, it remains one of the foremost examples of garden architecture in the prefecture—a fine case in which the aesthetic ideals of an Edo-period daimyō and modern Japanese-style architecture coexist in harmony. It is also valuable as a cultural-property building that forms part of the city-designated place of scenic beauty.
