麻生・安川とともに「筑豊御三家」と称され、炭鉱経営で「炭鉱王」と呼ばれた貝島太助（かいじまたすけ）の弟である貝島嘉蔵の邸宅として作られました。

　当初（大正4（1915)年）は直方（のおがた）市に建築され、昭和2年に現地に移築されています。その後、増築・改修等を経て、現在の形になりました。市内において有数の近代和風建築であり、筑豊の石炭産業全盛時の歴史を伝える貴重な建造物として、市の有形文化財に登録されています。
　令和４（2022）年4月からは、茶室などの貸し部屋やレストラン、ホールなどを整備した、緑豊かなおもてなしの場・高宮南緑地（旧高宮貝島家住宅）として活用されています。

Built as the residence of Kaijima Kazō, younger brother of Kaijima Tasuke—one of the “Coal Kings” and, together with the Aso and Yasukawa families, counted among the “Three Great Families of Chikuhō.” The house was originally constructed in 1915 (Taishō 4) in Nogata City and was relocated to its current site in 1927 (Shōwa 2). After subsequent extensions and renovations, it assumed its present form. As one of the city’s foremost examples of modern Japanese-style residential architecture and a valuable building that conveys the history of the Chikuhō coal industry at its peak, it is registered by Fukuoka City as a Tangible Cultural Property.

Since April 2022 (Reiwa 4), the property has been revitalized as Takamiya Minami Garden (Former Takamiya Residence of the Kajima Family), providing a verdant venue for hospitality with rentable rooms such as a tearoom, along with a restaurant and hall facilities.
