シーサイドももちの中央に、福岡タワーを背にして建っています。平成元(1988)年のアジア太平洋博覧会ではテーマ館にもなったハーフミラー貼りの建物は、ガラスの宝石箱をイメージしています。館内には国宝「金印」をはじめ、海外との交流を中心に展示を行い、旧石器時代から現代までの福岡の歴史とくらしがわかる常設展示室の他、４部屋からなる企画展示室と特別展示室があります。国宝の金印、太刀「名物日光一文字」、刀「名物へし切長谷部」、国指定重要文化財の黒糸威胴丸具足、県指定有形民俗文化財のどんざ等多数の文化財が所蔵されています。
　見学するだけでなく、楽しく学習できる博物館として、いろいろな図書を集めた読書室、アジア各地の遊具や楽器に直接ふれることができるみたいけんラボ（体験学習室）や講堂、講座室などもあります。

Standing in the center of Seaside Momochi with Fukuoka Tower behind it, the museum’s half-mirror-clad building—imagined as a “glass jewel box”—served as a theme pavilion at the Asian–Pacific Exposition Fukuoka in 1989 (Heisei 1). Inside, with an emphasis on Fukuoka’s exchanges with overseas regions, the galleries include a permanent exhibition tracing the city’s history and daily life from the Paleolithic era to the present, four rooms for planned (feature) exhibitions, and a special exhibition room.

Highlights of the collection include the National Treasure King of Na gold seal, the tachi sword “Nikkō Ichimonji,” the sword “Heshikiri Hasebe,” the Important Cultural Property suit of armor “Gusoku with a Domaru Cuirass and Black Lacing,” and many other items such as the Fukuoka Prefecture–designated Tangible Folk Cultural Property “donza” (work coat).

In addition to viewing exhibits, the museum supports enjoyable learning with a reading room stocked with diverse materials, the hands-on Touch & Experience Room where visitors can handle toys and instruments from around Asia, an auditorium, and lecture rooms.
