明治42（1909）年、日本生命保険九州支店として竣工した洋風建築です。設計は辰野金吾（たつのきんご）、片岡安（かたおかやすし）、施工は清水組（現在の清水建設(株)）により建てられた本建物は、屋根形状や壁面の多様な装飾など、小規模ながら変化に富んでいます。
　赤煉瓦と白の石材の組み合わせは、辰野が英国への留学当時、19世紀末に英国で流行したクイーン・アン様式を学び、日本へ持ち帰り独自の辰野式フリークラシック様式として取り入れたものです。屋根は平成18年に天然スレート葺に復し、外観を当初の姿に復元したほか、尖塔やドーム、避雷針を有しており、表情に富んだ構造をもちます。
　内部では天井や階段の鉄柵部分、照明など各所にアールヌーボー（草花や曲線美をモチーフにした造形）を用いたデザインが見られます。旧医員室や会議室のマントルピース（暖炉の装飾部）、縦長のガラス窓、天井の換気口など、各室の用途に応じて異なる設（しつら）えとデザインが採用されており見応えがあります。　
　戦後も日本生命のオフィスとして使用された後、昭和44（1969）年に国の重要文化財に指定され、市に譲渡されました。平成2（1990）年3月まで福岡市立歴史資料館として活用され、平成６年（1994）には建築当時の内装を復元し、「福岡市赤煉瓦文化館（旧日本生命保険株式会社九州支店）」としてリニューアルオープンしました。現在は1階の旧事務室をエンジニアカフェ、2階の大小3つの部屋を有料の会議室として活用しています。会議室は使用時を除き、見学可能です。

This Western-style building was completed in 1909 (Meiji 42) as the Kyushu branch of Nippon Life Insurance. Designed by Tatsuno Kingo and Kataoka Yasushi and built by Shimizu-gumi (today’s Shimizu Corporation), the structure—though modest in size—shows great variety in its roof forms and rich wall decorations.

The combination of red brick with white stone is part of Tatsuno’s “free classic” style, developed from the Queen Anne style he studied in Britain in the late 19th century and adapted for Japan. In 2006 (Heisei 18) the roof was re-covered with natural slate to restore the original exterior appearance; the building also features spires, domes, and lightning rods, giving it a highly expressive silhouette.

Inside, Art Nouveau motifs (inspired by plants and flowing curves) appear in the ceilings, the iron railings of the stairs, and lighting fixtures. Fireplaces (mantelpieces) in the former doctor’s room and meeting room, tall sash windows, ceiling ventilators, and other details reflect room-by-room differences in function and design, making the interiors especially engaging.

After the war the building continued to serve as a Nippon Life office until it was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1969 (Shōwa 44) and transferred to the City. It was used as the Fukuoka City Historical Archives until March 1990, and in 1994 (Heisei 6) its period interiors were restored and the facility reopened as the Fukuoka City Red Brick (Akarenga) Culture Center. Today, the former first-floor office houses the Engineer Café, while three rooms on the second floor are paid meeting rooms (open for viewing when not in use).
