祭神は底筒男命（そこつつのおのみこと）、中筒男命（なかつつのおのみこと）、表筒男命（うわつつのおのみこと）。航海安全、船舶守護の神として崇敬されています。
　国の重要文化財である本殿は、元和9（1623）年に福岡藩主・黒田長政（くろだながまさ）により再建されました。壁を伝統的な彩色技法である朱と白の胡粉塗（ごふんぬり）で彩り、檜皮葺（ひわだぶき）の屋根は切妻造り妻入りで、直線的な破風（はふ）をもつ本殿は、仏教建築が伝来する前の、古来の神社建築の名残をとどめており、住吉造りと称されています。25年ごとに改築・修理をする式年遷宮が行われており、直近では2010年に遷宮が行われました。その他、能楽殿（のうがくでん）、唐門（からもん）が市指定有形文化財、神社所有の銅戈六口、銅鉾五口は県指定有形文化財となっています。
　能楽殿は昭和13（1938）年に落成しました。西日本随一の舞台として能楽関係者から親しまれ、多くの演者が舞台に立った歴史を持ちます。戦災を免れた戦前の能楽殿のうち、全国でも現存例の少ない純木造の能楽殿として貴重な建物です。建築当初からの部材が多く残っており、能舞台は総檜（そうひのき）舞台として格式が高く、意匠は伝統的な様式を設えています。音響効果のため舞台床下には大きな甕（かめ）が数個置かれ、伝統的な舞台装置を備えています。現在は能の演目のほか、クラシックコンサートや発表会、会議やレセプションといったユニークベニューとしての活用もされています。

Sumiyoshi Shrine houses the deities Sokotsutsuno-o-no-Mikoto, Nakatsutsuno-o-no-Mikoto, and Uwatsutsuno-o-no-Mikoto. They are revered as gods who ensure safe voyages and protect ships.

The main sanctuary (honden), a National Important Cultural Property, was rebuilt in 1623 (Genna 9) by Kuroda Nagamasa, lord of the Fukuoka Domain. Its walls are finished in the traditional vermilion and white gofun plaster, and the cypress-bark–thatched roof is a gabled tsumairi form with straight bargeboards. Preserving features from before the transmission of Buddhist architecture, this style is known as Sumiyoshi-zukuri. A shikinen sengū (periodic rebuilding/major repairs) is carried out every 25 years; the most recent took place in 2010. In addition, the Noh Stage and Karamon (Chinese-style gate) are designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Fukuoka City, while six bronze halberds (dōka) and five bronze hoko spearheads (dōhoko) owned by the shrine are designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Fukuoka Prefecture.

The Noh Stage was completed in 1938 (Shōwa 13). Cherished by Noh practitioners as the foremost stage in western Japan, it has a history of hosting many performers. Among prewar Noh stages that escaped wartime damage, it is a valuable, pure wooden structure with many original components from its construction. The Noh stage itself is an all-hinoki (Japanese cypress) stage of high formal dignity, designed in a traditional style. For acoustics, several large jars are placed beneath the stage, a time-honored stage device. Today, beyond Noh performances, it also serves as a unique venue for classical concerts, recitals, meetings, and receptions.
