臨済宗大徳寺派で、山号は横岳山（おうがくざん）。仁治（にんじ）元（1240）年、湛慧（たんえ）が大宰府横岳（よこたけ）に創建し、翌年、宋から帰国した聖一国師（しょういちこくし）（円爾弁円（えんにべんえん））が招かれ、開堂説法を行ないました。文永（ぶんえい）９（1272）年に大応国師（だいおうこくし）（南浦紹明（なんぽしょうみょう））が入寺し開山。その後多くの高僧を輩出し、慶長（けいちょう）５（1600）年、初代福岡藩主･黒田長政（くろだながまさ）により現在地に移転され、黒田家の菩提寺として庇護を受けました。境内西北には、歴代の黒田家墓所があり、市の史跡に指定されています。
　山門は旧福岡城の本丸表御門を移築したもので、県の文化財に指定されています。同じく県指定文化財の唐門は旧名島城の遺構であると伝えられていますが、桃山時代の作柄そのままではなく、江戸時代初期に改築されたものと推定されています。市内に残る最古の唐門です。

　北門周辺は道路も狭く、駐車禁止となっており一方通行もあります。

This temple is affiliated with the Rinzai Zen, Daitoku-ji branch, and its sangō (mountain name) is Yokogakusan. In 1240 (Ninji 1), the monk Tan’e founded the temple at Yokodake in Dazaifu. The following year, Shōichi Kokushi (Enni Ben’en), newly returned from the Song dynasty, was invited to deliver the inaugural preaching. In 1272 (Bunei 9), Daiō Kokushi (Nanpo Shōmyō) entered the temple and served as its founding priest. Thereafter the temple produced many eminent monks. In 1600 (Keichō 5), it was moved to its present location by Kuroda Nagamasa, first lord of the Fukuoka Domain, and received patronage as the Kuroda clan’s bodaiji (family temple).

On the northwest side of the grounds lies the cemetery of successive generations of the Kuroda family, which is designated a municipal historic site.

The Sanmon (main gate) was relocated from the former Omote Gomon of the Honmaru at Fukuoka Castle and is designated a cultural property of Fukuoka Prefecture. The Karamon, also a prefectural cultural property, is said to be a surviving structure from the former Najima Castle; however, it is not purely of the Momoyama style and is thought to have been remodeled in the early Edo period. It is the oldest Karamon remaining in the city.

Visiting the Kuroda Family Cemetery
