文永（ぶんえい）の役で元軍と激戦が展開された古戦場跡で、かつては博多湾に面する千代の松原として知られた名所でした。明治9（1876）年、太政官布告に基づいて公園となり、明治33（1900）年から県営公園となりました。園内には、元寇にちなんで建立された銅造亀山上皇立像（どうぞうかめやまじょうこうりつぞう）、銅像日蓮聖人立像（どうぞうにちれんしょうにんりつぞう）のほか、福の神である恵比須神を祭った十日恵比須神社や元寇史料館があります。
　亀山上皇は元寇の際に、｢我が身をもって国難に代わらん｣と伊勢神宮などに敵国降伏を折願されしたことで知られています。銅像は福岡県市出身の彫刻家山崎朝雲（やまざきちょううん）が木彫原型を作成し、佐賀市の谷口鉄工所で鋳造されました。明治25（1892）年4月起工式が行われ、明治37（1904）年にようやく完成しました。、同年11月8日除幕式が行われました。
　日蓮聖人の銅像は岡倉天心（おかくらてんしん）が製制作を引き受け、明治37(1904)年に完成しました。像高は10.6mで、奈良の大仏（14.87m）、鎌倉の大仏（11.44m）に次ぐ、建造当時は、国内第三位の巨大青銅像でした。

This former battlefield, where fierce fighting unfolded with the Mongol army during the Battle of Bun’ei, was once a celebrated scenic spot known as Chiyo-no-Matsubara, facing Hakata Bay. In 1876 (Meiji 9), in accordance with a proclamation from the Dajō-kan (highest governing body at the time) it was designated as a park, and from 1900 (Meiji 33) it became a prefectural park. Within the grounds stand a bronze standing statue of Emperor Emeritus Kameyama and a bronze standing statue of Saint Nichiren—both erected in connection with the Mongol invasions—as well as Tōka Ebisu Shrine, which enshrines Ebisu, the god of good fortune, and the Genkō Historical Museum.

Emperor Emeritus Kameyama is known for having prayed at Ise Jingu Shrine and other sanctuaries during the Mongol invasions, declaring, “I shall take upon myself the nation’s crisis.” The bronze statue’s wooden master model was created by the sculptor Yamazaki Chōun, and casting was carried out at Taniguchi Ironworks in Saga City. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in April 1892 (Meiji 25), and the statue was finally completed in 1904 (Meiji 37); the unveiling took place on November 8 of that same year.

The bronze statue of Saint Nichiren was undertaken under the direction of Okakura Tenshin and completed in 1904 (Meiji 37). With a height of 10.6 meters, at the time it was built it ranked as Japan’s third-largest bronze statue, after the Great Buddha of Nara (14.87 m) and the Great Buddha of Kamakura (11.44 m).
