旧唐津街道沿いに面して建てられた町家。所在する馬出地区は、江戸時代から筥崎宮の神事に用いる杉板曲物（すぎいたまげもの）製作が盛んで、旧柴田家住宅も曲物製作を営む町家として大正前期に建設されました。
　博多町家は、片方に「店の間（表の間）」「中の間」「座敷」が一列に並び、その傍らを通り庭（土間）でつなぐ空間構成となるのが一般的です。旧柴田家住宅も切妻造り平入りの二階建て町家で、北側に土間の「通り庭」を配し、南側には通り庭と平行に「表の間」、「中の間」、「座敷」の三室を並べる一列三室型の間取りとなっています。外観も一階表側窓などにこの地区の町家の古い様相が残っています。
　曲物製作は昭和初期に終了しましたが、その後も専用住宅として存続し、現在は「筥崎とろろ」という飲食店として利用されています。筥崎宮・唐津街道周辺の町家景観を保存し、国土の歴史的景観に寄与しているものとして、国の有形文化財に登録されました。

A traditional townhouse (machiya) built facing the old Karatsu Kaidō highway. The Maidashi neighborhood where it stands prospered from the Edo period as a center for making sugi-ita magemono (bentwood cedar implements) used in rites at Hakozaki Shrine, and this former Shibata residence was constructed in the early Taishō period as a machiya for a family engaged in magemono (plateware made by bending thin cedar or cypress board) production.
Hakata machiya typically consist of a row of three rooms—“mise-no-ma” (front shop room), “naka-no-ma” (middle room), and “zashiki” (formal reception room)—linked alongside by a through-passage earthen-floor corridor (tōriniwa). The former Shibata residence is likewise a two-story, gabled, front-entry machiya: on the north side runs the earthen-floored tōriniwa, and parallel to it on the south are the three rooms in a single row (mise-no-ma, naka-no-ma, and zashiki), forming the standard one-row, three-room plan. Externally, features such as the first-floor front windows preserve the old appearance characteristic of machiya in this district.
Although magemono production ended in the early Shōwa period, the house continued as a private residence and today is used as a dining establishment called “Hakozaki Tororo.” For preserving the machiya townscape around Hakozaki Shrine and the old Karatsu Kaidō and for its contribution to Japan’s historic landscape, it has been registered by the national government as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
