中国・宋から帰国した僧・栄西（えいさい/ようさい）が、建久（けんきゅう）3（1192）年に創建したとされています。栄西は博多区御供所町（ごくしょまち）にある聖福寺（しょうふくじ）を開いたほか、お茶の種を宋より持ち帰り、日本に喫茶文化を広めた人物として知られています。境内にある菩提樹（ぼだいじゅ）は日本で最初に伝来したものと言われ、奈良の東大寺に株分けされたのち、日本各地に広がったとされています。

It is said that the monk Eisai, who returned to Japan from China under the Song dynasty, founded this temple in Kenkyū 3 (1192). Eisai is also known for establishing Shōfuku-ji Temple in Gokushōmachi, Hakata Ward, and for bringing back tea seeds from Song China, thereby popularizing the custom of tea drinking in Japan. The bodhi tree on the temple grounds is said to be the first introduced to Japan; after a cutting was later shared with Tōdai-ji in Nara, it is believed to have spread across the country.
