仲哀天皇（ちゅうあいてんのう）・神功皇后（じんぐうこうごう）・応神天皇（おうじんてんのう）・住吉大神（すみよしのおおかみ）を祭神とする神社。この地で没した仲哀天皇の霊を、神功皇后が祭ったのが宮の起源とされています。古くは「香椎廟」と称され、人々の崇敬を受けてきました。近くにある古宮には「棺かけの椎」が残されており、ここに仲哀天皇の棺を立て掛けたところ、周囲に芳香が広がったことから、「香椎」という地名が付いたと伝えられています。
　香椎宮は、全国に十六社ある勅祭社（ちょくさいしゃ）の一つです。勅祭とは、天皇からの御幣物（ごへいもつ）を奉り、御祭文を奏上する勅使を迎えて行う祭のこと。境内には、勅祭などで勅使を迎える際にのみ使用される勅使館があります。
　香椎造りで著名な本殿は、享和（きょうわ）元（1801）年に福岡藩10代藩主・黒田斉清（くろだなりきよ）により再建され、国の重要文化財に指定されています。入母屋造平入（いりもやづくりひらいり）に切妻屋根（きりつまやね）が複雑に連結し、正面の大千鳥破風（おおちどりはふ）、左右の車寄せなど、変化に富んだ造りをもつ日本で唯一の建築様式「香椎造り」特徴です。４月と10月中旬に行われる春秋の大祭で奉納される獅子楽（ししがく）は県指定無形民俗文化財です。

A Shinto shrine whose deities are Emperor Chūai, Empress Jingū, Emperor Ōjin, and the Sumiyoshi Ōgami (great gods of Sumiyoshi). Its origins are said to lie in Empress Jingū’s enshrinement of Emperor Chūai, who died in this place. In ancient times it was called “Kashii-byō” and received deep popular veneration. At the nearby Furumiya (Old Shrine) stands the “Kankake-no-Shii,” a shii (Castanopsis) tree where, legend has it, Emperor Chūai’s coffin was once propped; a fragrant aroma spread through the area, which is said to be the origin of the place name “Kashii” (“fragrant shii”).

Kashii-gū is one of sixteen chokusaisha (shrines where imperial envoys attend rituals) nationwide. In a chokusaisha festival, an imperial envoy (chokushi) is received to present offerings from the Emperor and to recite the imperial liturgy. Within the precincts is the Chokushi-kan, a hall used only when welcoming the imperial envoy for such rites.

Renowned for its unique Kashii-zukuri style, the main sanctuary was rebuilt in 1801 (Kyōwa 1) by Kuroda Narisuke, 10th lord of the Fukuoka Domain, and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The style—found only here—features a complex composition in which an irimoya (hip-and-gable) structure with a hirairi (side-entrance) plan is intricately linked with gabled roofs, highlighted by a large chidorihafu on the front and carriage-porch extensions on the left and right.

The lion dance (shishigaku) dedicated at the spring and autumn grand festivals, held in April and mid-October, is designated a Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
