文永（ぶんえい）・弘安（こうあん）の役（1274・1281年）の古戦場とされ、かつては「首切塚」とも呼ばれていました。供養塔は昭和2(1927)年、戦死した元（げん）軍兵士を供養するため、日蓮宗の僧高鍋日統（たかなべにっとう）の提唱により建てられました。塔には田中義一（たなかぎいち）や東郷平八郎（とうごうへいはちろう）らによる碑文が刻まれています。現在中央に据えられているものは平成17（2005)年に再建されたものですが、昭和2(1927)年当初のものも敷地内に保存されています。その他、張作霖（ちょうさくりん）書による「蒙古軍供養塔賛」の碑も建てられています。

A Zen memorial mound associated with the battlefields of the Mongol invasions in the Bun’ei and Kōan eras (1274 and 1281). It was formerly known as Kubikiri-zuka (“Neck-Cutting Mound”). The memorial tower was erected in 1927 (Shōwa 2) at the proposal of the Nichiren-sect monk Takanabe Nittō to console the spirits of the fallen Yuan (Mongol dynasty of China) soldiers. Inscriptions on the tower include texts by Tanaka Giichi and Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō. The monument now set at the center was rebuilt in 2005 (Heisei 17), while the original 1927 structure is preserved elsewhere on the grounds. There is also a stone slab bearing the inscription “Eulogy for the Memorial Tower to the Mongol Army,” written in the hand of Chinese warlord Zhang Zuolin.
