海の神である、綿津見（わたつみ）三神を祀る神社。宮司は古代の有力氏族･阿曇（あずみ）氏の系譜を代々受け継いでいます。境内の鹿角庫（ろっかくこ）には１万本を超える鹿の角を保管。その昔、神功皇后（じんぐうこうごう）が朝鮮半島での勝利を報告した際に、鹿の角を奉納したという伝承にあやかって、多くの武将が戦勝祈願に鹿の角を奉納しました。
　国指定重要文化財の朝鮮製鍍金鐘（ときんしょう）、県指定文化財の細形銅剣鋳型（ほそがたどうけんいがた）のほか、多数の社宝が伝わっています。歩射祭や山ほめ祭、神幸行事などのお祭りは県無形民俗文化財に指定されており、いずれも古式をよく保っています。

A Shinto shrine dedicated to the three Watatsumi sea deities. Its chief priests have inherited the unbroken lineage of the ancient Azumi maritime clan. Within the grounds, the Antler Repository houses more than ten thousand deer antlers. Following the legend that when Empress Jingū reported her victory on the Korean Peninsula she offered deer antlers here, many warlords later dedicated antlers in their prayers for victory. The shrine preserves numerous treasures, including a Korean-made gilt bronze bell designated as a National Important Cultural Property and, as a Prefectural Cultural Property, a casting mold for a slender bronze sword. Festivals such as the Archery-on-Foot Festival (Busha-sai), the Mountain-Praising Festival (Yamahome-sai), and the Divine Procession (Shinkō gyōji) are designated Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Fukuoka Prefecture and all faithfully maintain their ancient forms.
